Chernobyl Disaster ! We better not forget it !

Chernobyl is a word we would all like to erase from our memory. It [opened] a Pandora's box of invisible enemies and nameless anxieties in people's minds, but which most of us probably now think of as safely relegated to the past. Yet there are two compelling reasons why this tragedy must not be forgotten... First, if we forget Chernobyl, we increase the risk of more such technological and environmental disasters in the future. Second, more than seven million of our fellow human beings do not have the luxury of forgetting. They are still suffering, every day, as a result of what happened 14 years ago. Indeed, the legacy of Chernobyl will be with us, and with our descendants, for generations to come."

- Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General

Nuclear Power Powers the Bomb
Take Action on the 20th Anniversary of Chernobyl!

On the twentieth anniversary of Chernobyl disaster, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation encourages you to educate yourself and speak out against the construction of new nuclear powerplants. We invite you to recognize the global importance of the utilizing clean energies. Please JOIN TODAY to receive action alerts and add your voice to a growing movement for peace and a nuclear power free world.

Take Action!

1. Find out if there is a nuclear plant near you
Go to http://www.insc.anl.gov/pwrmaps/map/world_map.php

To find out what happens if the Chernobyl nuclear accident is applied to the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in California, go to http://www.mothersforpeace.org/resources/maps/maps/chernobylAppliedToDiablo

For a table of the world's nuclear power reactors, go to
http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/reactors.htm

2. Ask your government to support clean energy

In the US, call or write to your Congressional representatives and urge them to support reduced dependence on nuclear power and increased funding for the promotion of clean energy. To find contact information for your Congressional representatives, go to http://capwiz.com/wagingpeace/dbq/officials/

For further information read the Foundation's Nuclear Energy Fact Sheet http://www.wagingpeace.org/menu/issues/nuclear-energy-&-waste/start/fact-sheet_ne&w.htm

3. Promote alternative sources of energy in your community

Take initiative to decrease your community's dependence on nuclear power and find out if there are alternative sources of energy in your community. Here are some examples:

Solar Power- For more information on solar power, go to http://www.eere.energy.gov/solar/

Wind Power - For more information, go to http://www.eere.energy.gov/windandhydro/windpoweringamerica/

Wave Power - For more information, go to http://www.eere.energy.gov/RE/ocean.html

Exaggeration?
The comparison between Chernobyl and Diablo Canyon is a bit much. The Chernobyl design is far different than Diablo and had a lot of inherently dangerous features. Nuclear Age Peace Foundation exaggerates the dangers of nuclear energy and probably over hypes its alternatives (i.e., how do we get electricity when the sun is not shing or the wind is not blowing?). :-)

Like it or not, we are probably going to have to use some nuclear as well as fossil fuels with carbon sequestration. The world has huge energy needs and fossil and nuclear can generate it on the scale we use.

wel if we put half the amount of our time and research into improving alternatives then we might get somewhere safer! ;)

if only we live then only we can think of a future !

I do not totally oppose the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes ...but i do encourage the use of alternative cleaner and safer options!
cheers
